A group of people decided that what Venezuela needs is love and to smile more. So, on January 14 of 2012 they went to the most transited square in Caracas, Altamira Square (Plaza Altamira), with signs of “free hugs” and gave hugs to total strangers. This is the kind of stuff that a venezuelan would do to get a smile on your face :)

My special place

I have had the opportunity to travel to amazing places, but there is one that will always be my favorite. Peru has breathtaking Machu Picchu, Italy has beautiful sceneries and ancient stories, and theres Paris, the city of love with that ”je ne sais quoi” that always makes you want to come back. Nothing compares though to my excitement when I visit my favorite place on earth. This is my Eiffel tower, my Machu Picchu, and my Juliets’ house all in one. No matter how far I go, I would always love to go back home.

I was raised and born in Caracas, Venezuela, a country in the north of South America. Venezuela has it all: beaches, deserts, jungles, beautiful women, rural and urban cities, amazing food, old traditions, music that makes you dance, oil and Latin pride. Caracas, a beautiful city located in a valley behind the big Avila, which is the capital of the country. “El Avila National Park” is a huge mountain located on the north side of this metropolitan city that embellishes it with its touches of nature. With so many landmarks and inviting environments, Caracas has so much to offer and little to regret.

Caracas has some of the nicest and funniest people I know. Leaving aside that I’m Venezuelan, the citizens are always so happy and kind. They have that sympathy that makes you smile even if you are mad. They all love to laugh and don’t waste an opportunity to dance; is like you are living constantly in a party. Most of the peopleare polite and would help you any way they can. Even though the country isn’t good politically, the citizens still have that warm feeling inside that radiates to everyone.

I could talk about my beloved Venezuela and its beauties all day, but it would be a very long post. As I have said before, theres no better way to get to know a place than by visiting it. There are so many things in Venezuela that I havent mentioned like the highest waterfall in the world Angel Falls, the most beautiful beaches, and more. I havent found a place that can be compare to Venezuela in any aspect. There are so many more adventures and places still left to discover, but nothing makes me feel as proud as my own country. Venezuela is the place that anyone would love so much that you’d never want to leave. This is more than a country for me, this is where my heart and best memories would always be.

In Venetia

Opera singer in a Gondola

My last trip was to Italy. My family and I traveled from Milan to Marina di Camerota visiting the main cities like Venetia, Siena, Rome, Pisa and Firenze. Even though we had to walk so much during this trip, every city that I visited was amazing in its own way. Milan, with all the fashionista habitants walking in front of the Il Duomo di Milano or drink coffee in the Caffè Florian in Piazza San Marco located in Venetia. The beautiful and huge squares of Siena surrounded by amounts of people or the splendid sunsets in Firenze. The majestic Pisa Tower in Pisa or the magical Fontana di Trevi in Rome. All this moments I took my breath away but there are nothing compared to the power of a song.

While I was walking around in the charming Venetian streets my sister saw a museum of Salvador Dali and decided to take a look at the exhibition. Mean while, my mom and I stay outside waiting for her. The museum was located in a street right next to the water canal. It appears that this canal was one of the main routes for tourist’s gondola rides. So, we seated aside of the bridge and watch the gondolas go by. In the gondolas you could see couples, groups of couples, families, groups of friends and more. They would take pictures, wave at us and have a good time when I was looking at them. But one group of tourists made an impression that I would never forget.

While seated waiting for my sister a gondola with a family pass by slowly. This was a normal family: mother, father, girl and a boy. They were in the gondola talking and laughing and suddenly the father starts to sing “O Sole Mio” in Italian.  This globally well-known song is originally a Neopolitan song. The translation to English is “my sun” and it had been sing by the greatest stars from the opera like Luciano Pavarotti. Well, this tourist starts singing out loud “O Sole Mio” while riding in the gondola. All of a sudden the people sitting at the edge and the people that were standing in the bridge start singing with him. It was a live concert in the streets and the bridge of Venetia when everyone starts singing in unison. No matter if you were a male or a female everyone that knew the lyrics start singing with the men and the people sang beautifully with all their strength to the top of their lungs. The rest of the family was laughing and cheering the father. It was a huge spectacle that without any preparation became a sensation. When the song finishes all the people cheer and clap together and the men who initiated this improvised concert was so happy and proud enjoying the moment.

At the end there’s no architecture, coffee, museum or square that could overshadow the amazing feeling that humanity working together to create something beautiful makes you feel. That moment would remain in my mind forever and every time that I remember of it I would have a smile on my face. This adventure was definitely one of the most funny and the one that has reached my heart.

The quest for crepes

The city of love, the city of lights…. However you want to call it this city is that and more!  This place full of romance, art, great architecture and food makes all your senses go to another level of amazingness.  Everywhere you see there’s something magical to admire. The streets, the museums, the sculptures, the parks, and the Eiffel Tower make this city a favorite on everyone’s bucket list. Yes, I’m talking about Paris.

I went to France for a week with a group of students and teachers from my high school. Since it was a cultural trip we went to the most important museums, park, and historic places in Paris. The Louvre museum had the most beautiful paintings I had ever seen and I had the opportunity appreciate the Mona Lisa in her environment, so inspiring. The Champs de Elysee, a beautiful street surrounded by trees leads you to the arch of triumph, looked like a movie set; so perfectly charming and beautiful. Finally, the Eiffel Tower felt like a dream. Even though we have to climb hundreds of stairs just to get to the second level, it looked like we were flying over the entire city of Paris. Everything was just so fascinating.

After a long day of discovering we went back to the hotel, ate dinner and start our own party in one of the rooms. At midnight we had cravings for crepes and since we were in the best place ever to eat crepes we decided to look for this splendid desert. One of my friends remembered that she saw one stand of crepes one block from the hotel. So, we grab a sweater and went in our slumber clothing to our quest for crepes. We walked the block and we didn’t find the crepes stand. We decided to keep going for another block and another until we find what we were looking for. Apparently the block that she was talking about was in reality four blocks, so we ended up walking four blocks through Paris’ streets in the middle of the night. The walk was long, but we all had a blast exploring and laughing the streets of the city of lights. Finally we found the crepes stand on the corner four blocks away from our hotel. The moment we tried them there tasted like glory. So with the Tour Eiffel lights gleaming on the background we enjoy our crepes and walked back to the hotel. The adventure was dangerous and the scolding was huge, but I think that it was worth it.

I can definitely say that my trip to Paris was such an adventure: it was my first trip without my parents, I wanted to go to Paris since I was 10 years old and I enjoyed the best crepes I ever had after an adventure with my friends. Now I know it was really risky and childish what I did but I would do it again if I had the opportunity. . A little bit of craziness doesn’t harm anyone and, if your partners in crime are your friends, it’s so much better. Besides, craziness its what makes the adventure worth living and the moments unforgettable.
